Commercial Boer Goat farming is far more complex than simply confining male and female goats together with the expectation of selling the offspring at a profit after a few months. Successful management involves a meticulously planned and systematically executed series of activities carried out in a specific sequence. This includes careful planning of breeding schedules, nutrition management, health care protocols, and infrastructure layout, all supported by continuous hands-on experience and attentive monitoring by the stockman.
Key tasks like selecting superior breeding stock, monitoring pregnancies, managing kidding seasons, providing balanced nutrition, controlling parasites and diseases, and maintaining detailed records are all essential components. Together, these activities ensure high productivity, better animal welfare, and economic profitability. The stockman’s expertise plays a critical role in timely decisions and proactive interventions that prevent losses and maximize growth and reproduction performance. Thus, commercial Boer Goat farming demands a comprehensive, knowledge-driven approach rather than a simplistic view of animal confinement
🗹 Objective
In this course we will develop a framework or plan to schedule the numerous activities essential for a successful and profitable Boer Goat farming operation and to systematically organise and coordinate these diverse tasks.
This includes setting clear timelines for sales dates, breeding cycles, nutritional regimes, health interventions, and kidding season management. Students will learn to plan and execute key operational activities such as vaccination and deworming schedules, and mating management. By mastering this structured approach, farmers can reduce operational uncertainties, improve flock performance, and ensure consistent, sustainable income from the Boer Goat enterprise.
